Desert Eagle 41 mag Problems

Anyone know why the Desert Eagle 41 mag is so unpopular? Does it have any mechanical problems or is it just the caliber that makes it so unpopular? I am interested in one, but don't know alot about the 41 mag. Any help would be appreciated on the worth of a used one in good shape.

    There is nothing wrong with any of the Desert Eagle firearms that I'm aware of. The .41 mag has a small, but loyal following. It seems to be kind of a compromise between a .357 and .44 mag. If I were in the market for a Desert Eagle, I'd sure try to get one of the newer models which I think is Mark XIX, they do have upgrades that you can buy for the older ones to update them. The updates aren't for problems, but rather easier to use safeties, a totally interchangeable barrel option, etc.

    The .41 mag is a great cartridge. It's got more heft and power than the .357 but not the ear gouging report of the .44 or the recoil of the .44. But people are always caught up in the perpetual myth that the .44 mag is the end all be all. If you are considering a .41mag I don't think you would be disappointed.

    mattyboy the only problems i have had with the two desert eagles i had were they are BIG pistols and my hands are on the small size. make sure you can get a good comfortable grip if not you may not be able to shoot them well. they are accurate and reliable and the 41mag is a much better caliber than the 44 mag for most general hunting in my opinion

    The desert eagle is unpopular because of its weight. The .41 mag is un popular because of it caliber. Combine the two and many find it un popular. There is nothing wrong with the gun or the caliber. My 2 cents [8D]

    To comment on what buckdeer said... They are big grips, nearly huge grips (they have to be to get around those long cartridges). However, if you find that they are just a little too big for you, there are both factory and aftermarket grips for it that help reduce the overall size, they still won't feel like everybodies 1911 grip however. If they are quite a bit too big, then you're out of luck with the D.E. and might want to stick with revolvers...
    BTW, I originally only bought my .44 mag Desert Eagle as a match to my old-style Ruger .44 mag carbine. I started to think it was obsurd to carry a 5 1/2 pound sidearm with a 5 1/2 pound carbine. I am trying to get Kansas to allow a sidearm based on foot-pounds of energy not just a case length like they do currently so I can use my 10mm.

    The only thing wrong with the DE is that it is gas operated. Can't use my revolver hunting loads in it so I'm stuck with the old speer 220 grain TMJ bullet. That bullet worked just dandy on moose so far at 17 yards. Right between the eyes and it's lights out.

    Biggest problem is the choices for ammo for .41 are far less than the .44, and like above, this is one huge pistol. The caliber is sort of a cult following somewhat like the 10mm (I'm included for both). Both still excellent cartridges but probably either too far ahead or behind for their time. Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry probably did more for the .44 than any other reason of popularity.

    And Bambihunter, the state of Minnesota made exception for the 10mm
    when they give you the old argument.

    allechalley, nice to hear of another 10mm fan [:)], especially one that has seen the fight I'm fighting to try to make it legal. It sucks, my brother-in-law can hunt legally with his .357 and I can't with my very similiar (and typically more powerful) 10mm.
    I'll point that out to KWDP when I email and write them next. Do you by chance know where thier regulations might be online?

    The only problems I experience with .41mag ammo is the availability and the price. Other than that it's fun to shoot.
