45-70's range?
What kind of range can I expect to get with this caliber and what would be a good load for east texas whitetail. This is a modern rifle not BP.

About 150 yards using 300 grain factory loads with any reliability. It really start a rainbow trajectory after that. Most factory 300 grain loads are running right about 1850 FPS.

Seriously,how long a shot do you expect
to encounter?I had my Wessson & Harrington,
Buffalo Classic dead on at 80 yds.(32"barrel)
At 150 yds it was about a foot low.From what
I've seen of east Texas,I'd guess shots under
100 yds. would be the norm.Up to 100 yards,2"
up or down is about all it would vary.

With a good,adjustable peep sight, most people can hit up to 500 yards. It has a rainbow traj, yes, but if you shoot enough, you can figgure it out. I shoot antalope with my browning 1886 45/70 at 200 yards regularly, using a hot load and 300 gr Sierra H.P.

I am not real big on reloading myself but my old man was and he would load up 45/70's pretty hot and they always shot very nicely out to around 300 yards with his loads before you had to worry about trying to fire the rifle like a mortar. You still had to aim up pretty good but not nearly as bad as with standard wal-mart loads. My suggestion for any kind of good performance with a .45/70 would be to load your own if you have a good sturdy gun. The kick is pretty bad trying to chuck a 300some grain brick of lead out of the rifle at high velocity but for what I was doing the accuracy and range made up for it.

rldowns3 I load my Marlin 1895 with 405 grain Bear Tooth hard cast bullets that were made specifically for the Marlin chamber. Marlin for some reason made the rifles with very short throats. Any how I am getting just over 1900 FPS with that load and it will shoot 1-1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. It definately turns the old warhorse into a longer range cartridge than the factory loads available. the only reason the factory loads are so down loaded is because of all the older Sprinfield Trapdoors, Remington Rolling Blocks and Sharps still running around and being used.

Oh yea, I know what you're sayin, aglore. And that's what I love about the .45/70. There is lots and lots of room with that cartridge to tweak and tune to your preference and the bullet selection is huge and casting your own works great too. It's a good shoulder bruiser but I love my .45/70 Sharps (replica) and won't ever sell it. Those big heavy .45 slugs have a lot of ballistic drop but they are good and stable.
There is a reason the indians feared the sharps carbines in 50/70 and 45/70 because they knew they'd get picked off at 800 yards if they popped their heads up over them rocks. You just had to practice on getting that slug to "drop" in on them but they'll hit consistently.

But like your Old Red Ryder, ye gots to no whar its a commin down.
1000yds would not be out of the question and 405 grain moving at the speed of a Slow Freight Train, is still very Formitable. (What gets hit, is damn well hit).
Look at it this way: Is it more difficult to remember a 7mm Remington Mag, with a 140 Grain Projectile droping 37 inches at 500yds or Remembering the 45-70 dropping 16' at 500yds? Its all in Range estimation and Memory, now an't it?
