Fluted Chambers!??
I need some help here, a buddy and I were talking about military 7.62 weapons and the subject of fluted chambers came up. He was telling me the these were for enhancing a "dirty" round seating. His idea was the dirt has somewhere to go and not inhibiting the round as it seats in the chamber. My thought (and I was told this by somebody somewhere) that the fluted areas are for gas leaks to "help" with extraction. Anybody KNOW for sure?? THX. Guys!! ...Mark

I had a HK91 years ago. It was my understanding the flutes were to aid in extraction. The way the HK works, it could tear off the rim if it had no flutes. I reloaded the brass (The ones I could find in the weeds) many times. The marks the flutes left did not have any effect on sizing or crimping. 0 -
Wrong. The flutes are present to make the case HARDER to extract. The HK is not gas operated. It is a roller-locked recoil operated arm. Even tho it's got a HEAVY bolt and recoil springs, that's not enough to keep the bolt shut against the sort of thrust caused by 308 and 223 chamber pressures. The flutes INCREASE the surface area of the chamber. The brass case walls swell out into the flutes of the chamber, INCREASING the effort necessary to extract the case, and thus, open the bolt. 0 -

To aid extraction under rapid fire. But if you don't keep them clean = You will get an accute understanding of rough extraction. Basicly for Steel Hulls, which does not shrink as fast as Brass. Less surface against the Hull means easier extraction and aids in cooling the hull transfering less heat. But that is a calculated guess. [^]

Fluted chambers:
Aids in the extraction of the spent cartridge - military rounds are usually in steel casings as mentioned.
Steel casings are used for military ammunition - because some chambers are Fluted.
The steel casings doesn't expand to fill out the chamber - so it won't expand fully into the chamber, like a brass-casing would in a normal chamber (or as a brass-casing would in a fluted chamber).
It also helps the round in chambering correctly, because the tolerances doesn't need to be as tight as with a usual chamber in a huntingrifle and the fluting allows for debris/gunpowder to better move out of the way for the new cartridge.
This "loose" tolerance also allows for the possibility of more debris/gunpowderresidue to build up - before problems occur.
This is a good effect - as machineguns are usually quite dirty, might not get cleaned so often and simply because they're automatic(makes more dirt.).!!

I got news for you guys. The HK is a takeoff of the CETME, which dates back to the early 60's. If you "think" steel cased 308 was common in those days, you are fos. 0 -

is this not the exact OPPOSITE principle by which metalic cartridge firearms are made to operate?
Harder extraction=broken rims=stuck cases=dead soldiers. The germans of all people are not that complacent.
The reason for the delayed roller blow-back action,..is to operate from recoil energy,.....extraction aided by less case surface touching the fluted area, and recessed roller bearings on the operating system,therefore increases the efficiency of the process,...as is evident by the casings being some 30-40 feet from the rifle. There is no drag in that system,..at least not in the ones I have run through the wringer.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

alot of the top ipsc race guns builders use fluted chambers in order to feed and extract easier 0
