both barrels firing
I have an older 20ga SxS that fires both barrels when one trigger is pulled. The shotgun isn't worth that much so I'd like to try to fix myself. Do you think it's just in need of a good cleaning?

Well, in double barrels with two triggers there are two seperate firing mechanisms, they are packed kinda close togeather and it sounds as though there may be a piece of debris or a burr that is catching on the 2nd trigger and pulling them both at the same time or it could be that the 2nd firing mechanism has a worn full cock notch on the hammer and the shock of the recoil is causing the hammer to drop.
It sounds like a very minor problem and could probably be easily fixed by a gunsmith in a few hours. If you continue to shoot the firearm just be careful if there is a worn notch on the hammer or the lock then while the firearm is loaded it could probably be set off very easily by vibration or by dropping it. And it would kinda suck to load your gun up, snap it shut and it go off into your foot or something.

You said you wanted to try and fix it yourself so assuming it's a boxlock, you have to get the stock off with a 12" blade screwdriver to see what's going on. See if the sear notch is too worn or a trigger spring too soft or if there's rust . If this is a Stevens/Savage/ Springfield/Fox model B , the hammers may be made of die cast zinc alloy and can be replaced with steel hammers from Gunparts or you could use a triangular swiss file and recut the notch to match the other hammer notch. 0 -

Before you start taking things apart consider this, everyting has to be put back in under pressure. It ain't all that easy. Invest a few bucks and let a 'smith do it. You'll thank him in the long run.
