30-30 to 30-30 Ack. Improved
I have a 30-30 bolt action with an 18.5 inch barrel. Would having it rechambered to 30-30 Ack. Improved work due to the short barrel? Thanks.

you would still gain some velocity even with the short barrel. the real question is how much do you need a 100 fps gain in velocity and is this need worth the money in dies and smithing to convert to the 30-30 ackley. 0 -
Sure it would work....but your gain in velocity will be less than in a longer barrel. For that matter, your current chambering is probably less efficient than if fired in a longer barrel. You'll notice that Winchester and Marlin produce their standard carbines with 20" barrels, and they used to offer rifle versions with 24" barrels. The shorter Trapper versions place the emphasis on "handy" rather than velocity. If you're just looking for something a little more than what you've got I say, "go for it"; but if you want to realize the full potential of the improved cartridge I would rebarrel to 22-24". 0 -
Thank you for the information. I conclude the benefit is not worth the trouble in the shorter barrel. Thanks again.
