Garand Canvass Slings - Year Started ?
One from a novice to the experts ! Does anyone know what year the canvass sling went into production and use on the M-1 Garands ? I have information that the canvass slings may not have commenced production and use until 1943 ? Thanks for your expertise

The M1923 canvas sling was widely available &, along with the M1907 leather sling, was used on the M1 when it was adopted in 1939. Several other canvas sling models were adopted throughout the war.
It doesn't matter to most of us; original canvas slings are pretty much impossible to find.

In late 1942 the Ordnance Department adopted the simplified M1 sling to replace the leather M1907 and the canvas M1923 sling- which is a nightmare to install on a Garand! The M1 sling never did manage to replace the M1907 sling during WWII and was at best a supliment to the leather sling. There were something like five variations of the M1 sling and the earliest observed examples are dated 1943 so this is probably where your information came from. As Neal mentions, finding an original example M1 sling with its ink stamped markings still intact is very difficult.

The earliest M-1 Sling with quick detatch was 1943, I think a friend of mine may still have it, near perfect Condition and ink stamp very clear. The Canvas and Leather overlapped during WWII, because of climit and mosture conditions, The Pacific Theater saw most issue during the Later Part of the War. [;)]

I have an OD cotton web sling which is slightly less than 1.5" wide rather than the Garand standard 1.25". It is a little over 37" long and both the quick detach and latch were made to fit a sling of this width. There are the remnants of markings which are illegible. It will not fit the too narrow sling loops of a Garand or an M44. Anyone know what this is for? Thanks. 0
