Opinions of Remington mod 7
I'm considering one of these in .260 for my 13 yr. old daughter, what kind of accuracy kind we expect from the youth model with factory ammo?

I have hunted with a Model 7 in .308 caliber for several years and I would not trade this gun for any other on the market. It should be perfect for her with the short barrel and should be an ideal weight also. This gun is easy to carry and pull up for quick shots. I shot several types of ammo until I found that the WInchester Fail Safe Talon ammo shot the best. I know that the .260 is a flat shooter and also a accurate cartridge. I would use Hornady bullets in the .260 or the Federal Premiums. Although it only has an 18 1/2 inch barrel mine shoots quarter groups at 150yds which Im happy with since its not designed to be a target rifle. Hope this helps. 0 -

in my opinion, the model 7 is one of the best picks there is for a youth rifle. I've often considered it for myself even, being so small, compact, and lightweight. I would personally consider the 7mm-08 to be the caliber of choice for the youngsters, just because a friend of mine bought one for his grandson and we developed some loads for it packing an awful powerful punch with recoil very similar to a .243............I suppose the .260 would be very much like the 7mm-08 though........

Thanks folks I feel better about the choice. I dont think recoil should be a problem for her, she shoots a 30/30 off the bench without any problems, the gun just doesn't fit her well and she has a hard time making adjustments once we've got into the stand. I think the 7 will take care of the problem. 0 -
Both the 7-08 & .260 are excellent, accuracy in the Model 7 defies logic. The .223 is an excellent choice also, (If it will kill a Vietnamese it will kill a White tail).
From personal experience: I would chose the .260 over the 7-08. The .260 will handle anything from Groundhogs to Whitetail and Antelope. The Recoil on the .260 is considerably lighter than the 7-08. Can be loaded with the Hornady 95 grain VMAX or the 142 Ballistic Tip. Either do an outstanding job. [;)]

I guess I'm the oddball here. IMHO, forget the seven and get her a 700 mtn. rifle in 7mm-08. I would choose the LSS version. My 10yr. old shoots one and loves it. If she ever wants to do something different with the rifle later on down the road she will have the best action built to work with. I did have to take a little off the stock so the LOP would be right for him, but the piece we removed is stored away and will one day be put back on. I prefer the mtn rifle due to the longer barrel. It doesnt give that much more velocity but every bit helps. And the 7-08 with 140grn. balistic tips wont knock her shoulder off either. As a matter of fact I have hunted with a 7-08 for the last 6 years. I bought a new rifle this year because I want to try the 300wsm. Needed just a little more range than the 08 would give me. The 700mtn. rifle and a quality 3-9x40 scope should be no problem for her to carry while in the field. Yes the 7 is a rem. action it just aint the 700. Spend the little extra, cut the stock down and let her enjoy one of the best bolt guns on the market today.

BUY WHAT FITS HER TODAY.
You can always trade in & up as she grows.
There is always a market.
But, there is a small window of time to create the DESIRE & JOY of shooting sports.
Why "today"?
See far too many youths get what Dad thinks will be ok,...soon.
They wind up with guns that:
> Don't fit,
> Are uncomfortable,
> Don't shoot so well,
> Develope bad, poor shooting habits,
> Recoil is overpowering.
MOTHERS & Children ARE the future of this sport.
Only developed, by careful, thoughtful, sensitive work BY Dad.
Personally, if I had to do it all over again, I would buy the Rem 7 Youth model in 243.
Learning on Open Sights....first.
Simply, it's controlable, easily manageable, allows enjoyable paper target PRACTICE, and some varmit shooting.
Money doesn't grow on trees, so wise-timely purchase & trade up do come along, but the DESIRE & ENJOYMENT, are created, and have windows of opportunity that can be ruined.
This is a subject very dear to the shooting sports industry.

I am a big fan of the 7mm-08. It has great ballistics and does a great job bringing deer to their knees. However, I will have to agree with Guns & Glass on this one. It is going to be hard to beat the .243 for this young lady. Given her size and the size of the gun, recoil will be very managable in this light rifle. The .243 is more than enough for deer size game. The last thing you want to do is over gun this little lady which would possibly turn her off on hunting. Yep G&G hit it on the nose, the .243 is the way to go at this stage of the game in her shooting life.

I guess I have to go with Guns and Glass on this one. My father,being very generous, bought me an 870 with 30" tube when I was 14. I was big for age but truthfully, the recoil and barrel weight was a little much for a beginner. I still have it and fond memories every time I handle it but it was a little too much gun. Of course, I can't fault him on his choice nor the use he saw for it.
It would be great if she could shoot it or one like it a little to see
if she honestly is OK with it. Remember, it's going to be HER gun not yours(unless dad gets to borrow it occasionally). My only reservation is the choices and availability of ammo compared to the .243. Of course, all that with ammo is changing rapidly now.0 -
I appreciate all the info you folks have posted here, my dealer is ordering the model 7 in .260 in the morning and should have it by this weekend, $400 + tax. Now the search begins for a good copact scope. 0
