Colt SP

I have a Colt SP with a 2XXX serial number, slick bolt carrier, chromer bolt face and 3 prong flash hider. From all the info I can find it appears to be a 1964 model. It also has the correct Colt scope on it. Any info on this weapon would be appreciated. Thanks

    If the Serial number is 2501 up to 2999, it would have been manufactured in 1965, (actually the numbers went into the higher than that). Prior, 2500 or less down to 101, it would be a 1964. You've covered the rest.

    The serial is in the LOW 2000's. Does anyone have any idea of it's value. I don't want to be shooting a serious collector.

    I believe that the name of the gun you are describing is an "AR-15 SP1", not an "SP".

    The value depends upon condition, if it is in the original box, & if it has the original accessories that include 2 20 round mags, sling, cleaning attachments, etc. Colt sold several different scopes that fit this rifle.

    Yes it is an SP1. The overall condition is very good. No box. Military green sling. Two Colt 20 rounders, also in very good condition. Solid buttstock so no place to put cleaning kit, have the kit in the green VietNam style pouch.

    I'm not sure what you call "very good", I would expect such a rifle with 90-95% finish to sell in the $800-1,000 range, maybe a little more because of the scope. The accessory package would have looked like this:

    A few years ago when I was still doing gunshows I traded for a mint 1966 SP1, serial number was 00077XX; I got 2 Colt 20 rounders with it, they were probably original but who could be certin ... not a scraqtch on it, the guy said it didn't have 20 rounds through it and I believed him. It was so fresh that the upper and lower halves were still stiff when whey you opened it up ... I thought the most interesting thing about it was the buffer was actually 2 pieces, a head and body ... anyway, it was cool and I didn't shoot it just because it was such low serial number yada yada yada ... I like to to shoot my guns so I sold it for $2200 and never looked back ...

    Neal and KimberKid,

    Thanks for the info. I am inclined to follow your route and sell the Colt to someone who collects them. I don't think that I could bear to use one with that low of a serial number and in that good of shape as a shooter. I have several pre bans and shoot them often. I just picked it up because of the low number. Any ideas on the best place to post it?

    The sponsor of this forum, Gunbroker, maintains an auction site that is easy to use. I have sold more guns there than anywhere else. (I used to sell guns locally, but that is no longer practical due to state restrictions & the refusal of the local newspaper to accept gun ads.)

    You will do much better selling on Gunbroker if you post high quality digital photos, and write a DETAILED description of your gun. Many of the guns posted have dark or distant photos, and meaningless descriptions like, "It's in Real Good Shape." You've got to do better than that. You also need to describe who pays for shipping, & your return policy. And, you need to know & follow federal law.

    Thanks for the advice. I will definitely have a professional inspect it and grade it. This gives me the justification for the digital camera I've wanted.

    I have been collecting COLT SP and SP1 for a couple of years.
    The price ranges from $800-2200. Depending on the shape it is in, and the age.

    The average price for a SP 2XXX have been going for $1500.00-$2200.00

    I have seen (bullpup) rifle and it one of the cleanest sp I have seen in a long time. No marks on are scratches, very good bore. I like to add it to my collection. But I already have two in my collection.
    So if someone is saleing sp1 and sp for $800.00 let me know I will take a few of them.
