Marlin 30-30 to 45-70?
Is it at all feasible to change a 30-30 Marlin 336SC to 45-70? Shotgun News has a 45-70 barrel for the Marlin at such a decent price that it's got me wondering. I know the bolt would almost certainly also have to be changed since the rim diameters of the two cartidges are so different, but the overall length seems to be pretty nearly the same. I have a couple other 30-30s and just don't need a third in the same caliber.

While most anything can be done if you want to bad enough I don't think that would probably be a cost effective move. I would sell any un-wanted 30-30s and apply the proceeds to a 45-70.
They aren't barrels for the 1895 Cowboy are they? I would like one of those.

Converting a 336 to fire .45-70 is not feasible.
As you mention the rim size difference would be a factor,
as well as pressure considerations. The .45-70 loaded with smokeless powder in extruded brass will far exceed the pressure ratings of the .30-30 reciever. Handloaded examples easyily approach .458 Win Mag levels. The magizine tube would have to be changed as would the barrel, all this would require reworking the reciever to accept the larger diameter parts. The cheapest solution,by far, buy a Marlin 1895 in .45-70. Last time I looked there were a few in the Auction.
These are tough, accurate rifles, sure to please. The .45-70 is an excellent deer,elk, moose rifle, and they are not phased by brush.
Here in the Ozark Hills it is a prized caliber, sometimes referred to as the .45-70 chainsaw.

Your Caliber options with that boltface would be:
.219 Zipper
25/35 WCF
30/30 WCF
32/40 WCF
32 Winchester Special
38/55 WCF
Also the .356 Winchester and .375 Winchester cartridges might be possible. They were billed as higher pressure rounds though, Winchester even made thier guns in these calibers with a heavier than standard frame.
Personally, if it were me, I'd look into making it a 38/55.

Also 22 HP. You can send the rifel to Marlin and they will replace everything forward of the receiver changing it to 38-55 with a nice octogon 24" barrel and full length magazine tube for $260.00. 0 -
Thanks guys. I was pretty sure it was a pipe dream, but the idea of sticking a forty-buck barrel on my hundred-fifty-dollar Wallyworld 336 (yep, clearance special) and getting a 45/70 was very seductive. The 45/70 barrel advertised is for the 1895S--it's round so I guess it's not the cowboy model--, and it's in the Numrich ad. 0
