Colt Lightning .22

I just bought this on a GB auction and I think it's a fairly early one (5 digit ser no.) but it was listed as ".22 Long Rifle" even though it is only stamped "22 Cal". I had supposed, because of its age that it would have been intended only for shorts or longs, not LR. Does anyone know? Or know where to look it up? Or is it possible to check the length of the chamber by inserting the shank end of a #1 drill bit? I don't want to try firing it until I know more. TIA, Jerry

  Flayderman, notes that the small frame 22 caliber Lightnings produced between 1887 and 1904, were chambered for the "22 CALIBER SHORT AND LONG RIMFIRE".

  Yes, but.....who knows what has transpired over the years?! I have a low wall marked .22 Short and it chambers a .22 long rifle, whether by someone rechambering or??? Emery
