HK91 Synthetic butt pad removal

What is the best way to remove the butt pad from a synthetic stock for an HK 91?

  If its a genuine HK or licensed copy, it just pulls off ... clamp it in a vise and pull ... if its in good condition, or you don't want to damage it use some sort of padding like an old towel ...
  
  I'll bet Mark will be along shortly and he can tell you how its supposed to be done according to HK armorers ... if he doesn't get to this post first [:o)]

  No Kimber, that is pretty much the standard method. DLC, keep in mind that these plates are retained by two very stout snap-clips which lock over the two tubular rivets (these are where you place the locking pins when you take the butt stock off) so try to use equal pressure so the plate comes off all at once instead of just the upper of lower portion-- this can cause the plate to bind and makes removing the remaining part of the plate that much harder. Do not attempt to lever the plate off the stock by sliding a screw driver between the plate and the stock-- this is not an effective method as it causes the plate to bind and will mar the stock without fail.
  
  There is one other method which you can use to remove a butt plate which simply will not come loose no matter how hard you try (use this only in extreme cases): You can drive the tubular rivets out of the butt stock from right to left (there is a flat portion on the left side and a slightly rounded area on the right). You'll need a drift with enough clearence to push out the rivet but not so large as to come into contact with the plastic bushing that the rivet rides in. Keep in mind that the clips on the butt plate are exerting a large amount of grip on these rivets and it is no easy task to drive them out, but when the rivets are free the plate has nothing to retain it and simply drops off. To re install the plate you first replace the rivets and then mount the butt stock on the rifle. Now place the butt plate in the stock so the the snap-clips are lined up with the rivets. In one quick motion pop the butt stock onto a padded surface using the full weight of the rifle and the plate will snap back into place. I always hated changing HK butt plates and I wish you good luck!

  Thank you very much. I got the butt plate off today by placing it in a large shop vise and used about four layers of old t-shirt to protect the finish. I pulled with even and steady pressure straight up without rocking it and it came right out.
