Stick a bunch of paper towels in the bottom of a box, put rifle in box, put box in attic. Wait a couple weeks. (this only works in summer). If you wanna get fancy wipe it with mineral spirits first (paint thinner). 0 -
We did it in the field by boiling in water using 55 gal
drums cut in half the long way.0 -
There are two things to use. Heat and solvents. I have found kerosene and a brush to do an admireable, if somewhat messy, job. Any kind of heat, ovens-closed automobiles-boiling water, etc. is an asset.Keep in mind that the cosmoline is going to seep out and take pre-cautions with paper towels. I think that it should be followed with a kerosene scrubbing, as it gives the metal a cleansing wash, and an apppropriate coating of oil. Worked for me in the past.

Removal all metal from the gun. Pour boiling water over metal, dry, and lightly oil. For wood, buy some "Purple Power" from wal mart in the automotive section and put in a spray bottle. Spray, let sit 10 minutes, and wipe. DO this until no more goo is coming off and finish by pouring pure hot tap water (not boiling) over the stock until no oil comes out. Let air dry overnight, lightly buff with 0000 steel wool, and rub down with either Linseed, TruOil, or Tung Oil a few times.

1) Disassemble metal from wood.
2) Put metal in bath of gas, mineral spirits, brake cleaner, powder solvent, gun scrubber or some other hydrocarbon-based cleaner & soak.
3) Remove a piece periodically & wipe with rag- is it soft enough to wipe right off? Continue wiping. And wiping. And wiping.

All of the Above will probably do. But if you are talking True Cosmoline, and not Linseed Oil. Linseed can be extracted by placing stock over heated stove (no flame), the Linseed will start dripping out and will continue to drip out until all is gone. The Cosmoline is another mater; I find Diesel Fuel is the cheapest and quickest. The finish as you would the Linseed extraction. (Repeat: NO OPEN FLAME)
