CETME MARS

I recently aquired a cetme rifle imported by MARS Equipment in Chicago. From I can tell on the net, the rifle was most likely inported in the 1960's, and may hold some value. The old gun is in good shape, I would rate 85%. Does anyone have any info on the gun, and possibly what it is worth.

  Ahhh, finally ... someone that wants to talk about a real CETME!
  
  The CETME was designed in the 50's in Spain by German designers to update their army from Mausers to semi-automatic weapons ... Making the transition they developed training rifles, the FR7 and FR8 Mausers with an CETME style front sight and re-chambered to 7.92X54R(?maybe, I can't remember for sure) and .308 respectively In the early 60's the design was sold to H&K and taken back to Germany it is actually the predecessor to the HK-91.
  
  Not that there was ever an abundance of them but the CETME is pretty scarce nowadays I only see one at a show once every few years so its a sellers market if he knows how to market it! The last one I saw was an early version, it had the metal hand guard with a integral bipod, in 90-95% condition: a few minor scratches around the mag well and where the legs fold up into the hand guard and a few small dings on the hand guard as well as on the wood stock ... he was asking $2500 for it and sold it that day ... this had to be at least 2-3 years ago.

  A REAL CETME surfaces! Watch your step as there are plenty of Gun Broker members who don't even want to discuss as real CETME since it might spoil the affection they have for their CETME clones. The metal hand gaurd and bi pod mentioned by Kimber are from very early rifles, some of which had the grenade launcher as well as the swing down lower. By the early 1970's walnut hand gaurds were the standard and the bi pod was an option (there was also a scope mount. These rifles were delivered with 5 round magazines and the 20 shot mags (which people claim should have been included by Mars-- the rifles were shipped from Spain with them) were around $25 each...pretty pricey back then. Brand new in 1974 your rifle retailed for $229.95 and was distributed by MARS Equipment, 3318 W. Devon, Chicago, IL. You don't see these CETMES around much any more so enjoy your rifle. I owned an example many years ago and these were fine firearms.
