Herters Single Six .44Mag

I have aquired a Herters Single Six .44Mag. I don't consider it to be of great value, but am a little interested in its worth. It has 75% bluing, tight cylinder, riflings are good, grips are scratched. Can you give me an approximate value and a little history on the Herters name?

  Herters was located in Wascca, MN from 1962 until 1979. They sold all sorts of outdoors equipment, with an emphasis on hunting and fishing. Their handguns were mostly made in Europe, and were usually pretty good; made by old line manufacurers like J.P Sauer, etc. One of their last endeavors was the .401 PowerMag revolver (single action) and cartridge. Again, all in all, it wasn't a bad cartridge--but it didn't really catch on, because you had to buy the components from Herters pretty much as a sole-source supplier. As far as I know nobody is collecting Herters revolvers, so I'd say yours, in the described condition, is worth about $150-175 as a shooter. You should be able to get parts from the Gun Parts Corp., as I believe they bought a lot of the left-over supply when Herters went "belly up". Their catalogs were really entertaining reading, because they had so many proprietary items with their brand name; and everything was "the world's best". The Herters name is again in the public eye, but so far only as a seller of fishing tackle.

  I bought one of these in 1966 from Herter's for $47.99. It shot ok, but I sold it to a friend who still owns it after I purchased a Ruger Super Blackhawk.

  I have two of these in .401 Power Mag. The guns were made by J.P.Sauer & Sohns in W. Germany.The cartridge is slightly longer than a 10 m/m mag. with a rim.I think there's more .401s around than the .44 mag.
