Whats your view on the 308 winchester? Is it a good whitetail gun?

With proper ammo, Absolutely. The .308 is a very
versatile caliber. Used for varments to Elk, the loadings available for the .308 are as varied as the game and targets it's used on. My rifle is a 98 Mauser custom in .308. I've taken everything from prarie dogs to black bear with it, and never had to track any of them.
Shot placement is, of course, all important. But with proper loads for the job and you do yours thru the sights, you won't be disappoimted.

The .308 Winchester is a Legendary caliber, and anything that wildcated from it is just as accurate. Example: 6.6-08 (.260), the 243, the 22-250, (gonna get an arguement there<) 7mm-08.
The Bulk of calibes today came from existing calibers, (some Gun Nut wild catted it), the 8mm Mauser, the 30-06, the .308, and a few of the original 250-3000 Savage. Even the old 30-30, came from something else, wanna guess what?
Try and remember (when all about you are expounding their Prejudices), The Longest Confirmed Kill shot was amde with the .308, (until the Canooks barely beat the record with a 50 BMG caliber.)[:p]

Absolutely, positively - YES!
Probably the best all around chambering for everything from varmints(due it's exceptional accuracy capabilites) up through and including animals of Elk size.
Every rifle manufacturer has chambered the .308 Winchester.
Bullet selection is second to none.
It will do anything the 270Win, 280Rem, 7mm's including the Mag(s) and 30-06's will.

I have killed several deer with my Ruger .308 and it was one of the best purchases I ever made. I give it to my son one day so that he can kill his first deer with it. It's like any other gun. The right ammo and the right shot placement will drop'em where they stand.[;)] 0 -

Due to its very cheap surplus ammo, it's good for snapshooting practice, but your real long range gun should be a BAR, in 300 Win Mag. It makes 308 ballistics look sick by comparison. Out to 500 yds, the 223 is a quite superior fighting gun and caliber, under realistic combat conditions. 0 -
The .308 is real fine as a whitetail gun. Has plenty of power and large bullet to put 'em down fast, instead of letting 'em sneak off. Others(re;ACYMAN) would have you believe the .223 is superior for both human and animal targets, but use your noggin, how many states even allow you to use a .223 on deer? You can't go wrong with a GOOD .308[:D]
