Is this normal?
Today I went to a local dealer and purchased a Makarov/ PA63 semi-auto, and I have a question about something the dealer did. I looked at and handled the firearm in the display cabinet and when I said I would take it, the dealer returned the gun to the cabinet and brought an identical gun from the back. Is this normal?
This normally would not bother me, but the gun in the cabinet appears to be in slightly better shape that the one I bought, and the "action" feels smoother on the display model, too. I placed the gun on layaway, so I do not have possession of it as of yet. Is it improper for me to go back to the shop and ask that I be sold the gun from the cabinet. This dealer is well known in my area and has a good reputation. Any thoughts?

i have bought several guns in several stores most recently an ar 15 from a local shop where he had 3 of the same gun and always get the one i'm looking at. so i don't think thats normal 0 -
You should have politely told him "I want this one".
I would go back and ask him to do the paper work again on the gun you originally looked at. Try to be tactful about it.

If you like the one you handled better (and since you have yet to take possesion, or complete the sale -- have you even filled out the yellow form and done the NICS yet?), go back and tell him you would prefer the one in the display case and see what he says. If it is a new gun (which I assume), he may have thought he was doing you a favor by selling you one that was not the "display" model that has been handled by many people racking the slide, etc. I know several dealers that have display firearms and sell customers the unhandled firearms from the storeroom (but they always let the customer inspect the NIB firearm before completing the sale). They usually then sell the display models at a discount.

As of today, I have not filled out any paperwork or executed the PICS.
Also, the gun that I purchased is used.
A few minutes ago I sent an email to the dealer requesting the swap for the display gun. If I do not hear from them by Monday, I will go in person and try again. Thank you for the advice!

If the gun you handled was used that's the one you should (DEMAND) get.I'm a dealer and would never pull something like that .Tell him he keeps this up and he will have a bad reptutation instead of the good one he has now.

Several of the shops I deal with keep a display model out on the racks for the NEW and MIL-SURP guns, and what they hand you is one from the back room thats still in the origional box (unless you specify that you want the display model, at full price). Used and trade in guns are sold "as-is" off the rack.
In these shops, the only guns that you need "assistance" to handle are the handguns, and the "Kreighorf(sp) class" long guns, as they are kept inside display cases.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

When I had my gun shop, all guns that I would show someone , were wiped with an oil rag after I would show the gun, and the display model was cleaned and oiled BEFORE it went into the display case. That way the gun looked and worked better than the guns that were still in the box from the factory. Did the same at gunshows too... When someone said "I will buy it" I would get a gun that was in a box, and let them pick from the two guns. Most all of the time, people would take the gun that was in the box. Sometimes, I was asked if I had more of same and I would bring out all of them and let them pick.[^]

I would say that is a common practice, however, if you want the display model most dealers won't have a problem selling it to you unless it's been disabled or something, but I'm sure they'd still sell it to you if you really wanted it lol.

Hello, if you went to a car dealer and test drove a car, then decided to get it, and the dealer did the paperwork for a different car just like it, WOULD YOU ACCEPT THAT AS COMMON PRACTICE?
