If one were to buy an SKS what make would be the better choice a Chinese model or a yugo

  Chinese by far. Check the operating manual on both and you
  will see that the yugo is a little differant. Bob!!!

  Bob, whats different about them? i don't have a chinese gun to compare to.I am no expert by any means, but I have had no problems with my yugo.

  you will typicly encounter 2 types of chinese SKS`s. there are the cheaper, stamped sheet metal guns from the late 70`s and early 80`s which you want to avoid, and the late 80`s to late 90`s production wich have all milled parts (the "good" chinese SKS).
  
  the later, better chinese SKS, especialy the NORINCO production guns are nice items. all the parts are milled from solid stock instead of being stamped from sheet metal. fit and finish are superb for a mass produced military firearm. the example i own is a good shooter, and looks nice too.
  
  the YUGO sks rifle is not "bad". they are functional, servicable guns. the wood stocks are of lesser quality, and most have a sloppy, unnatractive, preservitive and oils stained finish. the fit and finish of the machined parts is not as good as the later CHINESE models.
  
  i have handled and fired both guns. we stock both makes at the shop. in my humble opinion, the CHINESE NORINCO is a better buy, and a better shooter. if you can find a RUSSIAN production piece in good condition at a reasonable price, choose it over either of the other makes.
  
  i am not trying to knock, or badmouth the YUGO, i just think the CHINESE NORINCO all milled gun is superior. best regards, mike.

  I just put a Norinco on layaway at my "BUDDY'S"
  urgings.$145 plus tax.Very good condition
  with 30 round clip.I'll find out in a couple of
  weeks if their as much fun as he says they are.[:D]

  i have never seen a stamped or sheet metal sks...only forged or milled...just my two cents...tom

  Toolman, they do exist. I've seen a few now and then, but they are rather rare. I don't recall them being an early series since they were initially built with Russian tooling/blueprints/supervision, just a short-lived Chinese attempt to make a cheap rifle cheaper.[;)]

  Some SKS Rifles have the barrel pinned to the reciever while others have threaded barrels. there are also some with milled trigger groups as opposed to stamped trigger groups. The best combination would be one with a threaded barrel and a milled trigger group. I have a Norinco with a threaded barrel and a stamped trigger group.

  Go with the Norinco. I have one and it is the only semi-auto rifle I own that has NEVER misfed, jammed, malfunctioned, or otherwise caused me even the slightest grief. For the money, they can't be beat.

  Personally, I don't put much stock in the screwed/pinned barrel debate. They are both good solid mountings and most of us will never have a need to take-off or rebarrel an SKS. Seems to be much ado about nothing.
