338 RUM Loads
I shot my 700 today for the first time. Four rounds, scope is not mounted yet. Buddy had me all worked up that it would detach my retinas and dislocate my shoulder. It has a light profile barrel and has the fiberglass stock so it IS very light. The recoil was equivalent to a good magnum 12 Ga slug. Not bad at all...I thought.
The load was Rem factory, 250 gr PSP; at 2,900 fps (per Rem). I've been told that Rem has loaded this up rather light. Any suggested starting loads out there? If so could you tell me (apprx) what velocity you eventually worked up to that still delivered at least 1.5 - 2 MOA. This will be an Elk load for a Wyoming hunt. And we will probably be going after a cow Elk on a ranch hunt(passed over in the draw for a bull, two years straight!). I believe some shots on these ranch Elk can be over a lot of open/broken country. Not like a wilderness hunt in heavy timber.

The factory Remingtons are only doing about 2850 FPS, that is why they say it is downloaded. The 340 WBY will do that with factory loaded 250 grainers. Try some RETUMBO. It is desishned to give 50-100 FPS more more velocity than the usual slow powders in large overbore cartridges like the 338 RUM.

I agree with aglore regarding the use of Retumbo. It is supposed to have the same action as the 500 series Vit. powders do when used in smaller cartridges.
Here is another thought about your choices for your Wyoming hunt. Consider trying the 210 gr. Nosler Partition or the 215 gr. Sierra SBT for the 338 RUM. Both bullets will yield a greater velocity for better ballistic performance over the longer ranges that you anticipate while carrying about 4600 ft/lbs. at the muzzle. Remaining energy at 500 yards is still above 1800 ft/lbs. which is more than sufficient for elk when the shooter does his/her job. Accuracy for both bullets usually hovers around the 1 MOA mark or even slightly better. Below is a blurb from the newest Nosler manual.

As a final suggestion, I would start looking for the next release of the Triple Shock bullets from Barnes. It is supposed to be for the .338 and in the 210 grain range. Everything that I have read, seen and shot, indicates that this design is very accurate and produces less fouling and pressure than conventional clad bullets. Just something more to put into the mix if you like.

I'll take up your suggestions. Accuracy needs to be near MOA because I will not get many hunts for Elk.
A 400 yard shot and a 4"-5.5" margin for error is within reason. 'Cause I'll probably NOT be shooting from a bench and the weather (wind) can be a significant factor!
I think Cathy, Mr. Barnes' wife, still shoots a 338 so I expect great things from their bullets!
