what's the formula for figuring out ft. lbs. of recoil?

would that single shot in 7.62x39 have very much recoil http://www.rossiusa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=R762MB&category=RIFLE I would have a decent scope on it so that would dampin it a little. Also i would be shooting just regular surplus and some huting ammo throught it, Yes i will hunt whitetail with it. so what will the recoil be?

There is slightly less recoil from a .308 (maybe 10%). There are dozens of tables, charts, and formulas for recoil, but I am just going to list only one example: a .308 and a .30-06 with identical bullets (180gr.) fired from identical rifles (weight: 8 pounds). The .30-06 has 20 foot pounds of recoil while the .308 has 17.9 foot pounds. I hope this helps you.

the differance becomes most apparent when you choose heavier bullet wieghts/loads. the 250gr woodliegh bronze solid safari load in the .30-06 has no equivalent .308 counterpart. in this instance, the larger case capacity, and larger range of heavier bullets make the .30-06`s recoil much more pronounced.
overall, i have to agree with MARK CHRISTAN. with similar loads, and bullet wieghts, the .30-06 is around 10% hevier in the recoil dept. best regards, mike.

Gas-operated guns will sometimes soak up more recoil than turnbolts; My buddies' Rem 742 in 30-06 kicks me less than my Ruger M77. Then again, I normally shoot a Ruger M77MKII in .300 Win with light handloads and think his 742 kicks harder with factory ammo!

mark is on the money,i have a savage 10fp .308,sometimes i intisapate the recoil on some of my guns and catch myself sometimes jerking the trigger the 10fp has the accutrigger that keeps you from doing that jerking the trigger here is a pic of the accu-trigger

Generally there are two types of recoil dealt with.
>"Actual", that is what energy is produced, measured in Foot Pounds.
> "Felt Recoil", that 'feeling' of the firearms recoil a perceived by the shooter.
Both are quite different as the "Actual" is, an objective measurement, whereas, "Felt" is how one personally 'takes' recoil.
Two shooters can shoot the SAME, gun, with the SAME overall weight, and the SAME load, but arrive at two different opinions of how the recoil 'felt'.
Many things influence recoil, but when comparing, all things must be equal to be accurate.

The basic formulia for "Free Recoil" goes somthing like this:
Bullet weight x bullet velocity + powder weight x powder velocity = rifle weight x rifle velocity. (There are some unit conversion constants that I don't have committed to memory)
So you can see that that more powder for the same velocity increases recoil, or that a increasing rifle weight will reduce recoil.
"Felt Recoil" is more subjective, and is highly influenced by stock shape and fit.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Think of the .308 as being 90-95% of a .30-06 in terms of recoil and in terms of energy at the target.

The .308 in a Remington 7400, has very litle recoil, as the 30-06 in the 742 does. Effectually = Both calibers are too simular in energy to mention. A JP muzzle break will tame the 7mm Rem Mag, the .300 Win Mag. and if applied to the 30-06 0r the .308, they become a Joy to Bench shoot. The Odd Duck of the .308's is the Armalite 10A4 or the 10 T, Recoil is just about zero and accuracy is nothing short of amazing.
