winchester experts need some ....
there is an auction near me soon and sale bill has a 308 win model 70 with ser num 71xxx havent seen it so cant say on condition of rifle but read that 308 win is very rare...anybody have any ideas on what value this rifle could bring?

The rifle is either a custom of some sort or a rechamber on a longer action. The 308 didn't show up until about serial number 210,000.

Ummm isn't that a late 1946 or early 1947 serial number? And chambered for a cartridge that wasn't introduced until 1952. [?] Somthing smells fishy there.
My "Blue Book" notes that for the M-70 "Standard grade" rifle (1946-1963), the 308Win chambering is extremely rare, and to watch out for fakes. Other rare chamberings include 250-3000, 300Savage, 35Rem and 7x57 Mauser.
I thought for a minute that it might be a 338 Win Mag (flier typo?) but that wasn't introduced until 1958.

not a expert but looked in one of my older books , it shows date of mfg 1946-47, it says that the receiver by itself is worth around $500, regardless of the condition of the barrel or stock . prices for the standard rifle in 270 is VG- 710, Exc 815, standard rifle in 243 is VG- 1050, Exc. 1200 .

A 71,000 Ser. No. range would have a YOM about 1946 to 47. Check those "x's" again.0 -
All of the above are good points. To throw out some more stats for consideration: The .308 was introduced in the model 70 in the featherweight(22" barrel) only in 1952 at about serial # 207000. .308 was the only catalogued caliber for the featherweight from then until 1955 when .243, .270, 30-06, .358 was added. They are, therefore the most common caliber in the featherweight. But..308 was not offered on the standard or super grade rifles(24" barrel) (except super grade featherweight). You could special order .308 in the target rifles and there were some, but not before 1952.71xxx was in 1947 the transition year from the type I pre-war receiver to type II (and note tailgunners observation). Pre64 70's ended at about 581000.maybe there is a 2,3 or 4 in front of the 71xxx and its a featherweight. Then it would be common at between 800-$1200.
