SMLE Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1 barrel

I have a .303 British Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1 that i recently purchased a complete stock set. This rifle was sporterized and I want to restore to original config. After starting assembly of the stock I found that the lower stock was longer than the barrel and the upper front fore stock will not fit either because of the front sight size being to big for the stock to lay flat against the barrel preventing the bracket from attaching. Does anyone know what the problem could be it looks like the one found at right now at http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/review/Enfieldno4mk1.htm and i'm wondering if I can get it to look like the others that I have seen with all the stock assembly complete.

Sounds like previous owner not only modified stock, but actually cut the bbl. If this is true, then I would suggest that you reassemble as you got it and use it as is. If you want one in original conformation, buy it that way. Remember, you can NEVER economically restore(to milspec), a relatively low priced rifle. A LE #4 in decent shape should only be $150 or so.

The only problem that I find is that if the barrel was cut how was the front sight mounted i see no fasteners of any kind visible 0 -
The barrel length of a No.4 MK 1 should be a bit over 25" and the front sight is a very large asssembly with protective ears. If the front sight on your rifle looks anything at all like the rifle pictured in your link (21-1/2") you have a shortend barrel, just as Morty told you. The sight could be attached by solder of "sweating", but it is not a correct military sight. Morty also gave you some sound advice: These SMLE rifles in typical condition are not rare so it is never worth restoring one. Just go out and purchase an original example (well under $200) in decent shape and use your sporter for hunting...or sell it and let someone else enjoy it.
