1911 Takedown

SA Defender. Replaced the original operating rod with a full length one. Takedown is a little different. Removed the slide stop and then the frame, the latter with the rod, recoil spring, barrel and firing pin extant. How do I remove the barrel for cleaning? Can't remove the rod or bushing in the traditional way and therefore can't get the barrel out. Appreciate any help.

  I don't use a one piece full length guide rod but my buddy Louie says the link has moved forward and is not permitting the guide rod to move at all, binding the bushing. He says to make sure the link is to the rear so that the hole is as far to the rear as possible. This should provide enough room to prevent binding and permit removal of the bushing.

  I have a full length rod in a 1911. The rod has an allen screw hole at the front end under the muzzle. Turning the rod counter-clockwise will dissassemble the rod.

  Two piece full length guide rods require an allen wrench to unscrew the front portion before the gun can be disassembled. One piece full length guide rods require a barrel bushing wrench to push down on the recoil spring plug (just under the barrel bushing) so the barrel bushing can be turned and the gun disassembled. I have seen the two piece full length guide rods come unscrewed in the gun and cause damage. Also, they seem harder to deal with than a one piece full length guide rod. (personal preference here)
