IDEAL 6MM BULLET
I'm having problems with developing a GREAT group with my Remington VLS 6mm Remington.I have been working with 75 grain Hornady V-max bullets. My question is,in light of the rifling twist of 9.125,am I off base with this weight bullet?Do you think a heavier bullet might settle down better? You can safely assume that all is proper with the firearm set up.Might there be an ideal grain bullet for this twist? I have tried different powder charges,primers,oal's,been very careful with barrel temp and bore maintenance.Just can't get a consistant group. Go easy on me! I'm only two years into this reloading.

The 6mm has for many years been my favorite all around caliber. I also have a Remington heavy barrel that I purchased 25 years ago. I began reloading for this gun when I purchased it and have tried almost every imaginable load there is. My rifle is also a 1 in 9 twist. First for a reminder make certain that all of your scope attachments are secure. As for the best load I have found was using the 75 grain jacketed hollow point on top of 38.5 grns of IMR 3031 powder. I have settled on this load because of its consistencey. I shoot a lot of turtles in the summer time and this bullet also has excellent expansion. It will put you somewhere around 3200 fps. Hope this information is of some assistance to you & good shooting.

OK my friend,..after some looking through my files,...I found my SHILEN recommended twist rate chart.
6mm
8" for VLD bullets over 100gr
10" for up to 120gr and VLD under 100gr
12" for bullets up to 85gr
13" for bullets up to 75gr
14" for bullets up to 70gr
15" for bullets up to 70gr (special twist)
I am going to say you should try those 90-95gr balistic tips and see what develops.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

With the 95gr Noslers BT's might I suggest trying 42.0gr of Reloader 19 (42.0gr - 46.0gr).
With the 90gr BT's, 47.5gr of IMR4831 looks promising (43.5gr - 47.5gr)
As always, start low and work up slow.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Try a 100gr round, should shoot tight groups. Check in the forum here often, lot of 6mm folks here.[:D]

try a different brand of bullet,i have tried hornady A max match bullets in two of my .243 win and neither liked the hornady bullets but both shoot nosler bullets very well. both of my rifles are ten" twist.
i reload 55 grain nosler bal tip for p dogs and coyotes here and they are very accurate in both rifles and make some very nice red vapor clouds on p dogs

o.k, lean toward a heavier bullet for your rate of twist. my 26 1/2 inch hart barrel loves 105 grain speers. if u r not getting any consistant grouping at all, get a go-nogo guage and check it out.
your bullets may be seated too far back from the rifling causing the bullet to "jump". the case overall length needs to be close. i would try the 90 grainers first as just-c mentioned. frankly, i am very surprised about the grouping problem with that factory barrel. i wouldnt mess with the primer, keep it simple. also keep in mind that for the 6mm rem, the maximum case overall length is 2.825.
the rate of twist on my barrel is 1x12 1/2. it did take some time to work-up the best loads. what type of groups are you talking about? 2in? 3in? 4in?. the more info u can give, the more we can help.0 -
You guys are great! Keep it comming! Groups are running about 2 inches.Within the group may be 3 out of 7 touching.(that is for maybe one load).Is it possible that the spherical powder is wrong for this cal..? Possible MOLY is not suited for this barrel? The plain 70's were getting there...

hornady make an 87 gr v-max thats is long so it should be fine i a 9 inch twist and it is light enough to give you good vel. 0
