You don't have to take the magazine tube off to plug the 500A. When you un-screw the barrel nut out to remove the barrel, there is a wood dowel that is inserted in that threaded hole. It is the "plug" to limit the number of rounds in the magazine tube. This dowel is about 5/16" dia., but your going to have to play with it to come up with the proper length. Good Luck! ...Mark

If you must take the magazine tube off or you just want to clean it. After removing the barrel, simply unscrew the tube counter clock wise. It may be hard to grip and I have used a piece of rubber sheeting to grip it enough to break the threads loose. There is a spring and a plunger that is held in by the receiver so don't let them fall out and lose them. 11echo is right. You can use a very small diameter wooden dowel as a plug. You won't ever get it out again unless you remove the magazine tube. If you want to use a commercially made plug or a larger wooden dowel you will need to remove the magazine tube anyway.

The wooden dowel plug that Mossberg supplies has a small O-ring attached to keep it from falling into the magazine tube. They didn't make one for the long tube, so you will just have to get a dowel rod and experiment. Get a dowel rod small enough to fit easily through the small hole in the end of the tube.

If you want to go with the shorter 5-shot tube, you also have to get a barrel with the barrel nut in the right place.
