Antique Pistol Care

I took posession of my first pre-1899 pistol this week. I know not to polish or replate it but what should I do to keep it from damage. I'm thinking of just a gentle cleaning and light oiling. Maybe some liquid gold on the wood grips. What do you experts do?

  I coat mine with a product called "gun sheath" from birchwood casey it's a light oil. Just make sure not to let it just sit too long in a sealed case. I keep mine in my safe with the goldenrod heater.

  Thanks for the reply. My plan is to build a glass top coffee table to display a few of these. I'll have some provisions for desiccant.

  whenever I get a new old revolver, the first thing I do is take it apart, and soak all the parts in a wd40 or any other rust penetrent. overnight. To stop any rusting action, and remove all rust. After that I gently rub it with an old tooth brush, after that dry it, and coat evrithing internel with wally's original gun and reel grease. the outside I cover with oil, and the wood grips get boiled linseed oil. 4 or 5 coats
  Sometime I loose a little bluing on some patches, but its still better than getting rusted and pitted. Remember rust is like cancer, it keeps on eating at the steal, until you stop it with wd 40, pb blaster, or lube job, the best.

  Well I better take some pictures so I can get it back together! Pa, the boiled linsead oil - these grips were varnished by Colt. Does that make any difference?
