Bonnie & Clyde Bullets?

There's a new show on PBS, "History Detectives" in which experts try to find out the stories behind certain antiques & curios....sort of a combination of CSI and Antiques Roadshow.

Tonight on your PBS Station: Were five spent bullets owned by a Wisconsin woman taken from the bodies of Bonnie & Clyde?

The deputies weapons were known to be at least one BAR (.30-06), several Winchester Autos (.351 Win.), and a bunch of various shotguns, .45 Autos and .38 revolvers.

Should be interesting!

  Re the officers who killed Bonnie & Clyde: Frank Hamner had a Remington Model 8 autoloader, probably in .35 Remington and a Colt 1911 in .38 Super. Prentice Oakly had a Remington Model 8 autoloader in .30 Remington. Old Pictures show Ted Hinton carrying around a Remington Model 8 autoloader. There was reference to at least one BAR. (Clyde had three of those in the car) I don't know what else everyone else was carrying, but I don't think there was one Winchester in the bunch. They had tried to ambush B & C over by Fort Worth earlier with Thompson SMG's and while they did manage to puncture the radiator, the car was drivable and B & C got away. Officers later found the car and discovered that the thick steel used back then on Ford auto bodies had deflected almost half the .45 ACP bullets which struck the car. That's the reason given for Hamner's reliance on the .38 Super Auto pistol, better car body penetration.

  There are lots of differing accounts of exactly which firearms were employed against Bonnie and Clyde. Period reports show that there were 6 peace officers involved in the shooting; Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, Deputy Bob Alcorn, Officer Ted Hinton, Texas State Trooper Mannie Gault, Sheriff Henderson Jordan, and Deputy Prentiss Oakly. The best known of the firearms used was Hamer's Remington Model 8 which had been modified by the Peace Officer Equipment Co., of St. Joseph, Missouri with the special 15 shot police magazine. Other firearms included four Remington Model 11 shotguns and one BAR. There were supposed to have been 215 projectiles fired by the officers and 180 of these were launched from shotguns, 20 were .30-06 slugs from the BAR and the remaining 15 bullets came from Hamer's Model 8.
