Nord- on the subject of chambers

Your response to Griz pompted me to inquire about my passion--- Elsies. On page 157 of Brophy's book is a drawing of chambers dated 12/21/07 and 6/3/36 which indicates the 16 ga. has 2-9/16" chambers. I was aware that the pre '13 20's have "short" chambers, but does this mean that all 16's through 1950 need to have chambers lenghtened?

  I don't know for sure. All I can say is that the gentlemen at Ithaca always measured chambers. I don't know if it was because they didn't want to go through the trouble of looking up serials, or because it was just easier to run a gauge down the gun.
  
  My thought is that Hunter was probably consistent as far as manufacture, but that the confusion over serial series was so great that the only safe thing to do was run a check on the gun.
  
  Experience has taught me that if you have an Elcee that kicks like a mule, then the chamber length is too short. These are smooth guns made by master craftsmen.
