Refinishing furniture on Mak 90
Can anyone help out with info on what to use to do this? This is a Norinco Mak 90 with a blondish color furniture to lite orange finish...can anyone tell me what kind of finish was used on the Norinco sks'...mine is like a deep orange color...I've read somewhere were they say to use tong oil...can anyone tell me what this is and if this was correct...I have new furniture on my Mak right now but would like to refinish the stock furniture...any tips would help also...would normal sanding do the job of removing old finish or would some kinda paint stripper ruin the wood...also could I use a iron (rather steam from an iron) to remove dings from the wood without damaging the wood? Any/all help and info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Larzman

Aircraft remover works good to safely remove the varnish finish. For Chinese stocks I use a "Honey Pine" colored stain (available from Miniwax) and Varathane Semigloss satin finish. The results are excellent and is very close to the original but more even.
Edit: I'll be doing some more stock work in two weeks, I can refinish your's if you pick up the freight both ways (call it a perk for being a poster here on GB[:D]). I can give it a "factory" gloss look or make it look like its dipped in glass, whichever way you like it[:D] Turnaround time is about four days for "factory" and up to two weeks for "glass" due to the different finishes and curing times. If you tackle it yourself don't get crazy with the sandpaper, those stocks are made from rather soft wood and you'll "undersize" the stock in relation to the buttplate and receiver and it'll be pretty obvious when you look at it. 2nd Edit: They do use tong oil if I recall to provide the "orange" color you describe. There is a stain that is a dead match for it, I just don't remember the specific color. I think it's light Mohogany but I'm not sure. Also the color will vary depending on how dry or prepared the wood is so apply lightly until you see how the wood is going to stain. Otherwise you'll end up doing a lot of sanding[xx(]

Thanks King Joey for the tips and the offer to do the refinishing...would you be able to do anything about the dents and gouges in the stock? The forend is kinda discolored in a spot also...would that come out with light sanding? I would be more than happy to pick up the s/h if ya would do this...just hit me back with an address.

The dents and dings will usually come out by steaming. The varnish can be wet sanded and reapplied as needed to even the surface out. If you finish it right small dings aren't visible because the varnish has filled it and is even on the surface. Be sure to include the buttplate (for fitting) and what color and finish you want. If you want the original color duplicated that is easy, if you want a different color give me a good description or a color sample to match.

I used a paint remover on my Mac..Scraped the finish off and washed the wood in soap and water..When it was completely dry I sanded the stock and used Min Wax to refinish...It turned out great..Don't rush the job, take your time...Andy 0 -
Wouldn't it be easier to put the MAK on the furniture? I think a nice table would do it. Unless it looks better by the sofa...
