Colt 1911 Cal. .455 ??

Just got asked if I want to buy a gun, Friends GrandDad, had it... I have not seen the gun, But did they make it in a .455? [?]

  I have seen some that were sent to England that were chambered in 455 Webley Automatic.

  They did indeed make the Colt 1911 in .455. I owned one until a couple of years ago, and sold it at a nice profit. If you can pick this one up at a reasonable price it will be a good investment. Naturally, the better the condition the more it will be worth. These were made for the Royal Navy in W.W.I and reissued to the Royal Air Force in W.W.II. They are very collectable.

  .455 Eley (or Webley Automatic) are a different cartridge than .45 ACP.
  
  Between 1915 and 1919 Colt made M1911s in the serial range W19,000 to W110,695 marked "CALIBRE .455" with a blued finish and proofmarked with the British Ordnance broad arrow.
  
  The original magazines usually had a lanyard loop and were marked:
  "CAL.455
  ELEY"
