Which brand of Sharps rifles??

Are any of the brands besides Shiloh Sharps of good quality? Im not sure i can afford a Shiloh rifle. Cabelas carries Pedersoli rifles, and i know there are a couple other makers. Are any of them good?

Also, ive noticed that the Garrett and Buffalo Bore +P 45/70 ammo is listed as safe for Shiloh Sharps, does this mean it is safe in other sharps brands?

  I have the Pedersoli Heavy Target model from Cabelas in (45-120)
  and its a shooter! The Dubble triger is sweet. Very easy to adjust the pull weight (on the outside).

  For the money, Pedersoli makes a great rifle. If you follow silhouette shooting at all, you will find them right up there with the higher priced guns. Some of the other Italian guns don't seem to have the extra care in fitting, polishing, etc., I have never shot them so can't really compare them in that respect. I have both a Shiloh and a Pedersoli, altho in different calibers, and both shoot extremely well. C. Sharps also makes a quality gun for slightly less than Shiloh, at least, they were less a while ago. As far as shooting +P 45-70 ammo, I guess I would just ask the maker what pressure loads are safe in their rifles. Emery

  FrancF, how accurate is your rifle, and what are your thoughts on its caliber?
  
  Mazo, in another post you made a reference to "duplex loads", could you elaborate on what that means? Ive never heard of that term.

  duplex loads involve putting to kinds of powder in the same case. they really should not be used unless you really know what you are doing. there is no published data that i have ever seen on the subject

  The Pedersoli rifles are tough to beat.
  They're fitted and finished is top notch. The accuracy
  is excellent. Shiloh, makes an exceptional rifle as well. all be it somewhat higher in price, as does C. Sharps. For my money the Pedersoli is the way to go. I Have them in 45-70,90,110 and 120,
  as well as 50-150-550. The longer cases require a bit of load tweeking to reduce fouling, but, once you dial in a load that works well, you're all set. Mine all have 34 and 36 inch barrels, double set triggers and verneer tang mounted rear sights with hooded fronts.
  They are deadly at any range. I would match them shot for shot with any of the others out there. There are also some custom Sharps repro's to be had, but, one needs EXTREMELY deep pockets to acquire one. I would'nt part with them for any price. They are a blast to shoot, no pun intended. I have had no problems with my Pedersoli's.
  I think you will well satisfied with one should you choose to but one.
  Always check with the manufacture of the firearm to be certain it is compatible with a given load. I load my own ammo and have no experience with the loads you mention. As with any firearm, over-pressure is not a good thing and can be very unpleasent for both the rifle and especially the shooter. Not to mention bystanders.

  Im pretty much set on the Pedersoli now but theres still the caliber choice. Does the .45-120 have that much extra "Ooomph" compared to the .45-70? I found some companys that load blackpowder .45-120 ammo, and 500gr bullets are launched at 1447fps. Some of the modern .45-70 loads excede these figures.
  
  I like the idea of being able to shoot factory .45-70 ammunition while i work on my blackpowder loading skills and work up loads for the rifle. But i want something with plenty of power and range, and shooting at 1000 yard paper targets with a Sharps sounds mighty challenging and fun, so would that rule out the .45-70 altogether? Or could i make due with it? I want the avoid the "duplex" loads you guys mentioned. I realize trajectory will be very steep, but i think thats part of the fun!

  Those 110s and 120s were designed for black powder so you have to know what you're doing if you load smokeless in them. They are BIG!!Lots of case volume. Duplex loads are not allowed in the silhouette games; those other matches where it is allowed usually limit the amount of smokeless to around 10%. That is say, 7 gr Unique if your normal BP load is 70gr. Then you reduce your BP to 63gr. I'm with you, I don't like to load anything but straight black in my old single shots. I'll use XMP5744 in my new guns sometimes. Emery

  When I got mine, I made some loads using XMP-5744 that is used for loads for 45-70 up to 50-140 cases. I was very happy with the accuracy
  with very little load Devlopment. I would say the groups were less than 3/4 at 100. It was also plesant to shoot. Like shooting a 12ga 3" mag. The Front sites are interchangable.

  What sort of velocitys do you get with the .45-120, using what bullet weights? Also, where do you get your brass from?
