SKS question

I don't know anything about an SKS.

How do you convert a fixed mag to a detachable 30rd mag or don't you?

I'm thinking about buying an SKS to keep in the trunk of my car because they are so cheap and I already have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x39 ammo.

  How can I tell what type SKS I have?
  I have seen type 56 mentioned frequently.
  I recently purchased a Chinese SKS.
  There is the number 26 in the triangle on the receiver.
  Importer was in Ca.
  
  Any help is appreciated.

  Never had a problem with the 20 and 30 round mags. Five round yes because you have no leverage. Before you take a file to anything, check your procedure. Get use to your weapon and how it operates. Let a few other KNOWLEDGEABLE people insert mags and give their opinion as to the difficulty level. Perhaps a mag change is in order. If all else fails, rub a little lamp black on the mag and insert. The lamp black will show where the chaffing is. Good luck.

  Remember the gunsmith's advise to me. If you must file, file on the cheapest part. The reason should be obvious.

  Okay thanks,Yeah I tried a diffrent mag and it was a little easier, I think I will leave the file alone for now.

  If the mag catch is too wide or has sharp edges it can be difficult to feed. DO NOT CUT ON THE MAG CATCH!!! The trigger groups are hard too find if you screw up. If you continue to have mag problems let me know, I have two M models and could fit some mags for you if you get in a pinch. I usually chamfer the catch edges and they work fine. Or you can just go drum-fed and not worry about doing many mag changes[}:)]
