Fill me in on this cartridge?

Found some brass at the Police Range. It was marked 5.7 x 28. Don't know anything about this round, but it looked like a neat carbine or varmint round. What do you know about it?

Measure twice, cut once.

  European round used in the FN Fifty-Seven and the P90 rifle. Very good penetration from what I've read.

  Developed in the late 1980s by FN for it's new P90 personal defense gun, this cartridge is intended to replace the 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge. Claimed ballistic performance is much superior to the 9mm cartridge.
  
  The 5.7x28mm cartridge is somewhat similar in shape to the commercial 221 Fireball cartridge. However, the two are not interchangeable. A sharply pointed Ball bullet weighing only 23 grains is used, as intended range is limited. Despite this, this bullet has been designed to penetrate helmets and body armor at 50 meters without breaking up.

  Just picked up a book at Barnes & Nobles in discount rack "The Complete Encyclopedia of Pistols and Revolvers" by A.E. Hartink.
  Something was familiar so I looked again.
  
  This is designated as 5.7 x 28 MM-SS190, designed by FN of Belgium
  in 1985. It is used in their new machine gun, the P90 and a companion pistol, the FiveSeven. As others have said, their hope is to replace the 9mm as NATO issue. Supposedly has effective range of 200 Meters and able to penetrate 48 layer bulletproof Kevlar.
  Bullet is 93 grain, runs at 715 meters/sec and develops 1534 Joules of energy. Sorry, they gave it in metric and I'm not up to converting this tonite. I remember also that the guns and ammo were to be only sold exclusively to military and police.
  
  So far the above book is interesting, but by no means the complete book of handguns, as I have owned a couple that he does not list and I am no collector.
