shotgun o/u help

I have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've noticed on over/under shotguns that some have a space between the barrels and some have a 'filler'. I'm not sure of the exact term, I think it's siderib, or vented siderib, could be wrong.
Anyway, does this siderib, or lack thereof, really make any difference in the gun? Are there pluses/minuses to having it? I would think that the barrels would be more stable if held together along their entire lengths, but considering how strong they are to begin with, I'm not sure it is a substantial improvement.

  While the siderib you speek of can add rigidity, it also adds weight which causes a smoother swing and follow through on target. There is not a need for support, just like plan barrel shotguns have none. Some manufactures sell a lighter "field gun" without the siderib to make it lighter to carry all day.

  Other opinions aside... It's for looks. A field gun will have the "fillers" in place. Trap or skeet might not.

  I thought it was for looks more than anything, thanks. I'm in the midst of a transaction for a Beretta 686 Essential, that's why I'm asking. Looks like a good gun, I've heard plenty of good things about it, I just noticed that space and was wondering about it. Thanks.
