M1 Help

I put money down on the M1 I talked about last week and picked it up today.
Springfield Armory #3431xxx
Stock marked SA over GAW crossed cannons along side and a P inside a circle on the pistol grip.
Bolt # 6528287-sa yo1
trigger group D28290-8-sa
safety c46015-9sa
hammer what I can see 500S-3sa
operating rod D35382-sa
Receiver A 2 9 B below that D2829135 also on receiver RRAD 11-65
Barrel marked SA 6535448 8 65 BU 24 also a D M and another symbol.
Barrel has a weld to receiver. Is this normal when installing barrels?
Bore looks good and rifle looks real nice overall.
Shooter or collector?
Any help appreciated.

  I looked at a M1 today in a gun shop. It was on consignment and the price was 550.00 Out ward appearance looked good. It was a Springfield Armory. Seven digit ser# starting with 3. Had a SA cartouche on stock and a bolt with numbers on it and letters SA. What else should I look at? Is this a fair price for a shooter?

  I would look at a good M1 book for starters. Seriously, barrel date, import mark, trigger guard, consistant finish, etc., etc.
  
  $550 doesn't sound too bad even if it is an import. Sometimes, you just gotta take a chance.

  For a shooter you should just worry about the barrel condition; is the bore bright or is it dark and pitted? To check the wear of the barrel you'll need to make a trip to the gunsmith where he will have gauges to check for muzzel wear and throat erosion. As it stands $550 for a nice M1 with a cartouched stock (it should read SA over NFR) of any kind sounds like a fair deal to me. You can sell the stock easily to a collector and purchase brand new wood which will look great and be better for shooting. I'd agree with skyking, sometimes you just have to take a chance and based on what you've posted I don't really see a downside to buying this rifle. Since it would cost you $500 plus $20 shipping and mean a 60 day wait to purchase a simular rifle from the CMP you are time ahead and not out much extra cash with this project if you procede right now and purchase this M1.
