Benelli Nova
What is your opinion of the Benelli Nova Pump 20 Gauge, 26", 3"? I've heard they are very good and quite nice to shoot.

If it is a real Benelli - you would be lucky to own one if it only costs 300US$.
Yes, Benelli shotguns are usually pretty expencive, but you pay for what you get. Quality is TopNotch with Benelli - all the way.
I know that the Danish police (Riot-control/Swat-team), Danish Frogmens corps (Dk Elite military equivalent to Seal-teams) uses the Benelli Nova.
They have tested it here in Greenland, tried to cram it with snow and bits of ice - dip it in water and anything it might be exposed to under heavy use.
I heard from the Danish/Scandinavian distributor, that they had so much fun with it during testing, that they used even more cartridges than the test required.
It is now standard in the Emergency-pack that is found in helicopters or planes that is in service over wildlife-preservations here in Greenland.
GreenlandAir had Winchester pumpguns as standard, but a test showed that they were difficult to put together for people who knew nothing of guns. So they were of no use.
Benelli required 4 pictures on how to assemble and two to load it.
Simple, easy - near foolproof.
All metalparts in the Nova are covered/protected by a compound that is bonded to the metal - so if it craps out on you - you can disassemble it easily, no tools required, wash it in even a muddy water-puddle and reassemble it.
Then it should work again.
I'm sure anyone on this forum would agree, that Benelli is a GOOD choise - even over a Remington.

I have looked at these shotguns, too. I looked at the camo versions and found several at a gun show for $300. I didn't buy one because I figured there had to be something wrong with them to be that cheap. I would also like to hear from someone here who has one..... 0 -
I have a 3-1/2" 12, and the gun has a few shortcomings--1) it kicks like h***, 2) the foreend rattles,and 3) make sure it fits you before you buy, as the stock cannot be shortened. Other than the above it is totally reliable and a great value for the money. 0 -
I agree with laxcoach...the foreend is too noisy to be a great turkey or deer shotgun, I use one as a backup for my Super Black Eagle for duck hunting...it is cheap and reliable insurance when I'm on a hunting trip. 0 -
They are down to $280 around here. I bought one when they first came out love it. Forearm rattle is easy to fix with a hunk of rubber vaccum hose.
I have the recoil reducer for shooting 3 1/2" shells but don't use it as it makes the gun so heavy.
The entire gun can be broke down without tools in seconds.
I think it is comparable to the older 870 Wingmasters in quality and dependability. The new 870's do not even come close. Neither does Mossberg.

If you want a Benelli save your money and spend expected $1000. I also agree with laxcoach. You normally don't expect real noticable recoil with a 2 3/4 shell out of most guns, However a 2 3/4 shot out of the nova fells like a 3.5 in other guns. IMHO, I would stick to your 870.

I've had a Nova for a couple (maybe 3?) years now. It's an excellent gun. They have a mecury recoil reducing thing for the stock, I put one in mine. The forend rattle can be dealt with if it's really a problem - a number of people have solved it using strips of velcro. It's a very fast cycling shotgun. I have an early 50's 870 that my father owned, I think it points a little better than the Nova. 0 -
I have shot an 870 for years now and last fall I picked up one of these novas for waterfowl and turkey. It's good points outway the bad.
Positives
1. Its easy to break down
2. Its cheap
3. It has built in sling attachments
4. Can take a recoil reducer
5. You can clear the chamber with out cycling new shell. I think this is a great safety feature and is never mention when people talk about the nova
6. Has a great camo pattern on it
7. Has small fiber optic sight which my 870 doesn't. My 870 is pretty old I don't know if the newer ones have this feature on them or not.
8. I saved the most important one for last. I have run this gun through all types of conditions and it has hasn't failed me. Its been dragged through cold wet and muddyconditions and performed perfectly.
Negatives:
1. its heavier than my 870
2. Forend is a little noisy but not to bad. I bagged tw turkey with it this spring
3. ITs got a longer stock than my 870 wingmaster and took me a while to get use to shouldering it.
