.280 REM Ammo Choices
Well, my supply of Remington Extended Range Ammo is about to run out. They stopped making this cartridge several years ago, and I don't understand why. The stuff worked great out of my Remington 700 Mountain Rifle, and it dropped just about every deer I shot in it's tracks. So, here I am faced once again with finding a replacement that will work as well. I'm going to try the Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 160 Grains first because they seem to be the only people making a pointed soft point bullet in .280 Remington over 150 grains. The big question is would I get the knockdown performance out of the lighter bullets on the market? And if so, what bullet type would give me the best peformance? A pointed soft point, a nosler partition....the possibilities are endless? I can't afford to buy a box of every type of bullet out there, so which select few should I try? Any thoughts folks......

I shoot Hornady Light Magnums, 139gr. through my .280 Handi-rifle. It groups better than I can shoot, and it is fast...over 3,000ft/s. I took a heavy bodied bull with this round; the bullet was retrieved from just inside the skin on the far side with about 85% weight retention.

I've been looking at this round too. It seems to be a similar type of bullet to the Extended Range ammo I used to use just a little lighter. It definately seems to be a faster round than the typical .280. Thanks for the info.
BTW, how's the Handi-Rifle? I've been thinking of getting one in .243 for my wife and daughter to use.0
