22 short, in a 22 gallery??

I friend just called. asked if you can shoot a .22 short in a gun thats says 22 gallery It's a Winchester.. [:)]

  Yes you can. The 22 gallery round is the same as a 22 short in size. The difference is that the gallery round was frangible, it broke up on contact so it would be less dangerous to bystanders. It also was like a CB cap in that it had less or no powder. These were made for carnival side shows and indoor shooting.

  A lot of model 1890 and 1906 Winchesters were used as gallery guns, but I have never seen a Winchester 22 marked "gallery'. I would be interested in what model it is. If it is a 1890 or 1906 made specifically for gallery use it would be chambered for 22 short and have a triangular loading port. Also many of these had the Winchester logo script roll died into the side of the reciever. I would think that any Winchester made as a gallery gun would be safe with modern 22 short ammo.
  
  Also there were model 62s and 62a's put into gallery use. They were even more popular in England than here.
