Father-Son Shotgun Project
My Father-in-Law gave my boy a 20 ga. Iver Johnson Champion Single that had been sitting in a garage for 20 years or so. I thought we'd do a restoration on it.
THe barrel has 80% blue with surface rust, the case colored receiver has 70% case left, with rust on the surface, and the wood is virtually
scratch-free, but the finish is peeled a bit. Bore is 95% or better.
So..we thought we'd start by using Blue wonder on the barrel with some brass wool. The receiver and trigger guard is another matter. What product should we use to clean them up? And, what do you recommend for the wood?
We both realize the gun isn't collectible, we'd just like to make a trap gun out of it. He's a small kid for his age and it fits him pretty good.

Use a fine, brass, wire wheel on a bench grinder to get the rust off. Eye protection is critical. Use 0000 steel wool if you don't have a bench grinder. It'll take much longer though. Excellent opportunity to go buy a new tool. Then use any cold bluing product. Follow the directions on the bottle.
Wood is wood. Refinish it the same way you would a fine piece of furniture. Tung oil carefully rubbed in gives a nice sheen to good wood. Looks good on crappy wood too.0
