Model 12 feeding problem
I have a Winchester Model 12, 1953 field grade, that won't hold shells in the magazine tube. They pop out after two or more are loaded. I am planning on having a gunsmith take a look at it. In the meantime what does this sound like? a worn cartrige stop/cutoff or deeper problems. Are parts available and is this a big deal to have fixed?

If you have used this gun for years then a problem started that would lead me down one path of correction but if you just bought it perhaps another.
The topics in this particular forum get locked after 10 replies so I'll try to post what I can.
If the follower depresses to load but does not come back down, thus dumping the shells out, I'd say it's weak/broken spring on the follower because that follower holds the shells in the tube. (The follower is the silverish grooved piece of metal covering the bottom of the receiver that you would depress to load the magazine tube)
However, if the follower, after loading, allows the shells to slip out and end up "behind" it creating a huge jam, then you have some very worn or broken parts. I have never seen those parts wear out, so probably broken. Whatver it is it's repairable.
Summary: As far as I know the "top side" of the follower holds the shells in the tube. If it is not retaining them, look for the problem there.

booger sounds on target. Not many people broke the magazine tube down to clean it very often. I've owned over 50 Md 12's over the years, and that's usually the first thing I do is completely break the gun down. Most magazine tubes are full of crud. I've seen where people have used sticks for a magazine plug, springs so heavily coated with crud I'm surprised that the gun can feed at all. I'd start by breakining the Mag tube down for a good cleaning and fresh oil/grease coating. Start by removing the 2 screws on the mag plug first, then slowly work the Mag pin out, keeping a finger on the plug or it all will pop out at once. If that doesn't work a new cartridge cuttoff might be in order. They can run anywhere from $10. to 25. Becarefull if you buy a used one, you run the same risk it might be bad. thay are also fairly easy to replace. booger is right again, these parts seldom wear out, they just get dirty. Regards Dave 0
