Whats better?
I'm trying to decide what is the next gun i should buy. I'm thinking of getting a) Mosin Nagant M-44, b) Enfield #4 (.303 or .308) c)a .308 mauser I would like to know whats better for setting up with scope, distiance, accuracy, and over all long lasting. Any advice would be nice thanks

Any one of the three are going to last, history has already proved that. The Mauser lends itself to scope mounting better than the Mosin or Enfield. With the Mauser's stronger lockup, I would choose it over the other two for accuracy, provided it has a good barrel. 0 -
I was just wanting to know which of the older mil. guns would be better to sport. I have an old yugo mauser that shoots really good. I was just wanting to get something outher then the 8mm. 0 -
None of 'em really lend themselves to scope mounting. None of 'em were ever intended to have scopes on them and it buggers up the balance. However, if you're going to butcher a military rifle go with the Mauser. The available scope mounts for any No 4 are not very good and require the removal of the rear sight. They're all about the same regarding accuracy and effective range. Stick with .308 just for surplus ammo availabilty. Up here there is very little surplus .303 ball or 7.62 X 54. Lots of .308 though. 0 -
I just bought both the M-44, and a 48A. I was amazed at the accuracy from both guns with surplus ammo. They are both a ton of fun to shoot, and the ammo is dirt cheap. If it was me, I would look for something else to put a scope on tho. There are plenty of used, low priced, good, name brand bolt actions/pumps out there that are better suited to throwing a scope onto.

By the time you do all the work to sporterize a military rifle and with the cost of it all to do it right, you could just as well go out and buy a brand new rifle. I mean drilling and tapping the reciever, bending the bolt,restocking the rifle, putting in a low mount safety, and a better trigger.
Ron Shircks, which is a wholesale distributer and list in Shotgun News recently listed a Savage 116 which is a short actionrifle available in 243 or 308 for under $350

If you like to tinker with things I'd get an old mauser and a 30-06 barrel from Century Arms. E-gunparts.com has removable clips for the mauser. Plastic stocks are cheap and there's a guy selling flash hiders for them on fleabay. Creating something that will last is a nice hobby.
Or you could just fork out the clams for a setup ready to go.0 -
You stated that you had an 8mm so why look at something else. If you look at handloads, the 8mm will be as good as the .303, .308, or the 7.62 X 54. I purchased a used set of RCBS dies and 60 pieces of brass just to do some hand loading for some 8mms that I have. As others stated if you are going to spend a lot of money top sporterize a military rifle, add a few bucks more to buy a used sport rifle. Don't over look the 8mm as a decent hunting round for most North American big game. I have rifles in most calibers except 30-06 and from what I see, the 8mm can make a decent hunter by reloading. All the guns you mentioned will need some work to put a scope on and do it right. Just my 2 cents worth. 0 -
Thanks for all th help guys. To tell the truth I'm suprised to find out the mauser is the one everyone said to go with. As for hand loading I don't know jack about that so thats something else to look in to. once again thanks 0
