new Glock question

i recently picked up my Glock 19, it is my first semiauto handgun. along the inner rails of the slide there is a thick brownish substance that i assume the factory puts on. what is it, and what is it for? should i clean it off?

  that goo i know is anoying .it's like a protective all factorys put on their new guns to stop rust corrosion etc,also remember all factory's test fire your gun there should be an empty cartridge in your box.
  what i do is i take a apart my gun use a sponge w/ some dawn liquid dish soap and scrub off the goo and and carbon,then make sure it is *ALL DRY* then due a therou clenining make sure to use CLP ,hope this could help u out.

  Just a note: Glock don't need much oil. Just a little oil or white lithium grease on the slide rails ought to do the trick.

  It's an anti-seize/lube the factory puts on the rails. You can use it or replace, but don't worry about it.[;)]

  Don't forget to put one drop of oil under the connector "hook". This is critical in Glocks. I have a G27 that goes about everywhere with me. It is one fine shooting pistol!
