Smith & Wesson triger push off "HELP"

    We just received a Smith & Wesson 4" Mod. 15 revolver. It will shoot in double action but when you try to cock the hammer it just falls. We took the haammer out and examined it to find the notch was broken where it would normally hold the trigger back in the ready position for single action firing. We installed a new hammer and it will now stay back except it has light push off. meaning we can push on the hammer ever so lightly and the hammer will fall. What did we do wrong and what do we do to correct it. Thanks in advance

    It may not be anything you did wrong. Could be the result of a previous owner's attempt at a trigger job. Did the D/A trigger pull feel exceptionally light before you replaced the hammer?

    If you have other spare parts (of known good quality) that you can swap out one at a time, you just might sneak up on the culprit.

    Check to see if the rebound spring has been replaced with one that's too light, or possibly has been cut too short. Check to see if the sear engagement area of the trigger has a nice sharp angle to hold the hammer when cocked in single action....

    Also, compare the main spring to one of known quality to see if it has excessive "arch". It should be fairly straight when its out of the gun.

    If none of those things work, check back. We'll figure it out.... [;)]

    At the top rear of the trigger is a down radiused area coming to a point, using a med/fine cutting stone, sharpen the point area, most cases this will solve push off.

    Do what I did. $ 25.00 UPS to S&W. They rebuild free and return
    prepaid freight... Need a box?

    these parts are plentiful and cheap on auction sites, including this one. Not advisible to stone the parts too much in an attempt to restore them; you would need new parts to study in order to get the angles correct, and you can cut through the hardened surfaces, leaving softer metal which will wear faster and bring you back to the unsafe condition that you are trying to rectify.
