Oddball Mossberg Shotgun Barrel Question
Can you tell me something about this barrel?
It is for a Mossberg 500, and is 18.5 inches long, and so marked, and marked cylinder bore.
However it has no front bead sight, nor any provision for one. It has not been sawed off.
At the rear of the barrel is a dovetailed block, threaded for a screw. Maybe for a special scope mount?
What was this barrel originally made for?
If anyone replies by email, I can send pictures.
Thanks

Nunn,
I seem to remember Mossberg making a slug shooting version of the 500 that had a 18.5 rifled or smoothbore barrel and a provision for a cantilever type scope mount. The only times I've seen these is for scope use, otherwise they have the crappy little bead or rifle sights. Sounds pretty uncommon[8D]

if my memoery serves me correctly, mossberg offered the model 500 in the late 70`s that had dovetail cut ghost ring or target style sights in the back, and a bead or ramp front sight that was attached to the gun on top of a BBL band/sling swivel arrangement. BBL length was 18 1/2" or 24". the front sight group had a tendancy to work itself loose, or get knocked out of alignment.
also, the mossberg 500 bullpup BBL had no front sights at all, and the carrying handle sight set-up would have made one useless(the handle incorperated a fixed sight design). BBL length was offered in 18 1/2".
hope this helps. best regards, mike.

YOU DO HAVE A MOSSBERG OR MAVERICK "BULLPUP" BARREL. IT HAD NO SIGHTS AND THE CARRY HANDLE / HEATSHIELD ASSEMBLY IS SECURED TO THE DOVETAIL SLOT[:D]. OVER THE YEARS, MOSSBERG AND MAVERICK BULLPUPS USED 18 1/2" 6-SHOT, 20" 8-SHOT AND 20" 590 TYPE 9 SHOT BARRELS, ALL WITH NO BEAD AND THE DOVETAIL SLOT.
