S&W Revolver PINNED but not RECESSED?
I have been looking to purchase a revolver .38 or .357 and have been looking primariy at Colt, S&W and Taurus. I have come across a number of guns that are described as either "Pinned but not Recessed" or "Recessed but not Pinned". Can you please help me define the meaning of these statements. Also, in inspecting a revolver for wear, what should I be most concerned with in a used revolver?

Recessed refers to the mouths of the cylinder chambers being enlarged (counter-bored) to the diameter and thickness (depth) of the cartridge rim, so that the rear of the case (primer)is even with the rear surface of the cylinder, whereas with non-recessed cylinders the forward surface of the cartridge rim sits on the rear surface of the cylinder and the thickness of the rim is above the mouth of the chamber. Pinned refers to the feature that was at one time standard on most S&W revolvers which involved a small pin passing through the side of the frame just to the rear of the juncture of the barrel and frame. The pin also passed through a groove in the top of the barrel's thread shank inside the frame, and the idea was to prevent the barrel from shooting loose in the frame and turning out of alignment. This was eventually deemed to be unnecessary and was discontinued. 0 -

The only thing i have to add is; back when they decided to drop the P&R features, they ran out of recessed cylinders before they ran out of pinned barrels. Thus, some of those later transition models had the pinned barrel but not the recessed cylinder.> Bob
