  The best book on the subject is "US M1 Carbines Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch; this describes just about every part & marking. More interesting (and more expensive) is Bruce Canfield's "Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine."
  
  A good Internet forum for you to browse is the "M1 carbine forum" on the Culver Shooting Page (www.jouster.com).
