stamped in top of frame and bbl.British Constabulary its double action
38?? have no idea what i have here

  Chickenfarmer;
  Need a bit more information. Barrel length,
  number of chambers, solid frame or break top. From you're brief discription I'm assuming it's a revolver. The "British Constabulary"
  is interesting. The Bobbys did'nt, until recently, carry side arms.
  Therefore, it was a gun kept in the armory, for use in emergency situations. Any other markings, proofs, or inspectir marks would help greatly in pinning down what you have.

  Geez, is it a .38(likely .39 S&W) or a .44? "British Constabulary" doesn't always mean it was used in England. Could be any of the colonies. India or Hong Kong most likely.

  Wonder if its a WEBLEY ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY MODEL..came in .445 caliber..Double Action, Swing Cylinder, Lanyard Ring..
  Then there was the Model 1873, 11mm, six shot..Strickly a Low Power Black Powder gun..and was used by the Colonial Police up until 1960..It also has a Swing Out Cylinder and Has the Lanyard Ring..Not saying its any of the above....Just Wondering...Like to See a Photo and know the exact caliber....I'll be watching the thread...

  Believe your revolver is Belgian, "Bulldog Type" made in great quanity between 1880 and 1914.
  "j. pliers" would be either the manufacturer or retailer.
  "bte" is the abbreviation for the word "Brevete", I believe.
  The "Bulldog Type" with "Constabulary" markings generally had metal butt-caps and lanyard rings, i.e. revolver normally carried by a uniformed police officer. BUT, the markings were meaningless, the Belgians sold this type of revolver to anyone who had the money to buy them.
