I believe that the discrepancy that you are asking about can be explained by defining 2 terms: "Assigned serial # range" is the range of #s assigned to the manufacturer for pistols produced under its contract, while "# actually produced" is the # of completed guns. Union Switch & Signal, Swissvale, PA, did not complete & delivery to the US Govt every pistol in its assigned range.

While US&S delivered > 50,000 guns, most were lost, destroyed, or rebuilt. Only those in original condition have a high value. The GB auction is a good place to sell yours, but don't bother unless you have high quality digital photos. If you want to determine exactly what you have, you might want to post them on the Culver Shooting Page M1911/A1 forum (www.jouster.com).

The info I have on the US&S serial numbers:

    Union Switch & Signal: S/N 1,041,405 to 1,060,000 = 1943

    Union Switch & Signal: S/N 1,060,000 to 1,096,404 = 1943 (S/N's 1,088,726 to 1,092,896 were duplicated by Colt. Look for "G.H.D." or "W.B." Colt inspection initials.)

That adds up to 54,999. Close enough to 55,000.....if you find the extra one, send it to me. [;)]

Follow up on this Union S&S, 1911.

A prominent Colt collector contacted me the day I posted this request. Over the next few days I sent him as many a 20 detailed pictures.

    His final e-amail:

This 1911 is all original and unique in that all stamping are correct and verifiable. Dies to make the stampings: show the same die made each stamp. This 1911 is correct in every aspect down to the T. I have not seen one as correct as this one! I will buy it!

    He bought it.
