Blue Wonder Gun Blue - Again

Tried Blue Wonder for the first time, followed instructions on box exactly. Got a beautiful blue. Instructions say to let it set for 24 hours or more after developer, before oiling. Did exactly that and found parts were lightly rusted. Not a major problem because I tried it first time on small parts. Would have been more than somewhat unhappy if that happened on a shotgun barrel. Does anyone have similar experience?? How about oiling, say half hour after applying developer?? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

    I think your parts were not clean enough maybe,did you use the cleaner?

    As I said before, I followed the instructions exactly per printed on the back of the box. Box says 24 hours or more. I used the cleaner. Both were clean bright metal, sort of dull polish, degreased. The finish produced is a good dark blue, how dark depending on how much product you apply. The Blue Wonder website http://www.novumsolutions.com/gunblue.html lists many dealers and I ordered it from one at the posted price at the time, which was a few months ago. Please note that you must clean your job with their Blue Wonder cleaner which is sold separately from their gun Blue kit. Further, In their video they do a 'new blue' and a 'touchup' which I watched several times and took notes. I am just curious about the rusting I mentioned and thought I might get some info from someone with experience with Blue Wonder. I might add that I have used probably every cold blue under the sun in the past 30-40 years, none of which are much good. Best home blue for me is Belgian Blue that is foolproof and only needs hot water. Dark blue satin finish. Unable to product a high shine finish with it. Thanks a bunch for your input.     I tried it on my BP revolver. All I could get was rust. I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned and cleaned....ad nauseum. I heated the metal till the cleaner sizzled. I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned ...etc. I know some will tell me I didn't clean enough, but if it's that much trouble it's not worth it to me. After two times stripping and cleaning and trying to blue and just getting rust, I just went back to the other blueing and settled for less than perfect results.

    My opinion; use it on show guns that you are willing to put way too much time into cleaning and getting perfect.

    Further to my above, I reblued the parts with Blue Wonder and after about half hour I oiled them. Now two days later they look fine.

    Hi guys. I just ran across this thread that I had not seen before and would like to address the rusting problem. The original instructions say to wait 24 hours before applying oil but over time, listening to feedback from customers and further testing; we now recommend that oil be applied after a shorter period of time. In normal cases 4-6 hours is good but you can apply oil in as little as two hours. Rusting should not occur too soon if the metal was properly cleaned, however, no matter how clean it is, it WILL rust after some period of time if it is not oiled. The developer, though it looks and feels like oil, is not and it will cause the piece to rust. Oil must be applied to prevent this.

    Since I started this subject I have had more experience, some good, other not so good. I refinished a cheap .410 double shotgun and was never able to get a good blue on the receiver or on the trigger guard and the metal part of the fore end. I may not have polished them good enough. The trigger guard blue is not bad now but it took a lot of trying, starting over and over. Finally I just kept applying the BW till it seemed to 'take'. Never got beyond a sort of gray blue on the fore end piece. When I get time I will polish both parts and try again. Receiver still had good enough polish but blue was worn. Best I could get was something that looks something like a poor color case job. The barrel was another story. It was in fine condition but the blue was worn off in several places without damage to the surface. I did the BW procedure on it and it came out beautiful.
