22LR vs 22mag

I plan on buying a Ruger 77/22 next week. Could someone give me an idea on the extra effective range the mag would have? The guns are about the same price but as you guys know, there is a huge difference in the price of the ammo. I just want to be sure that I'll get enough extra range to justify the ammo price.

    What you gonna use it for? A 22 mag is good out to 125 yds for varmints. If you are going to punch paer then go with a 22 LR. BTW, I just bought a Ruger K77/22-VMBZ, 22mag, varmint rifle. I am going to be selling my Ruger 77/22 RMP .22mag, stainless synthetic. I just wanted a heavier barrel rifle. Either way you can't go wrong. I must say that my new varmint rifle has a little better trigger on it. However, a Ruger is a Ruger when it comes to triggers.

    Thanks boom. You say 125 for the mag. About how much less for the LR do you think? Yeah, varmints. Please e-mail me about your old one.

    I have not really done much with the 22LR when it comes to varmints. I really only use 22LR for paper punching. I would imagine it would have enough punch out to 60 to 75 yards to do the trick on small varnints, may be more. Coyotes of course are a different story all together, tough little critters. The new 22 mag bullets are much more accurate than they used to be, plus the bullet design is much better. I am sending you mail.

    i have been shooting lots of 22lr & 22mag for varmints or fun...prefer the remington 22mag ballistic tip (even over the 17 )....you gotta try the aguila 22lr super maximum hp or solid at 1750 fps....impressive....why not buy both...forget the ruger, buy a less expensive brand & have both calibers....example i have a charles daly 22 mag that shoots better than my ruger stainless all-weather for about 40% the price.. or go to a long bbl pistol with both cylinders?????? enjoy

    Thanks for the reply guys. Spaz, I want one of those Richard's laminated stocks - drop dead beautiful. Unfortunately they come for a limited selection of actions. The 77/22 is one of them. Dog, if we take varmints out of the picture and just consider long range targets, what do you think of that Aguila Super Max cartrige that Spaz mentioned? I realize that with 30 gr, I not going to take down a bear!

    Since you even considered it in the first place, get the magnum. The super grade 22lr ammo is just about the price of the 22mags. Plus, too much gun never hurt anyone. For a rifle, check out the savage. Damn accurate rifles, or at least their bolt action centerfires are. Have a buddy with a savage 17hmr and he claims it will leave the rugers in the dust. Like the ruger, the trigger needs to be worked on a little but after that look out bullseyes.

    I used my nearly factory (that's shot several hundred-thousand rounds) to shoot prairie dogs up to 150 yards a few weeks ago. From a rest, the gun now only averages 3" group or so at 100 yards, so it wasn't a single-shot, single kill scenario... It certianly took a lot of prairie dogs that day, but obviously didn't have the punch of the centerfire's that were fired that day. I would highly consider getting a centerfire. It seems the shells aren't a lot more expensive than .22 mag match or varmit ammo, and the guns typically aren't a lot more expensive (especially than .22 mag), but would be more versatile and would certainly extend your range greatly. Something to think about anyway.

    I think you'll be pleased with the 22 mag, it's great to shoot my Marlin 22 mag after a couple hundred rounds through my Ruger 10/22 lr. Check out the inexpensive PMC Predator ammo, accurate enough for 125 yards or so. Just my opinion.
