Capt, not doubting you, but I did not know the 404 had exposed hammers! I have a H&R catalog from about that era, I will check it to see if I can find any more.

    Hi Guys,

This is not a import gun, it is a VERY old USA made sidelock double gun with hammers. Left sidelock marked: Harrington & Richardson Arms Co., Worcester, Mass., USA, Pat., Feb 27, 00. Action, barrels and forearm all serial numbered 27,xxx.

It is not in any of the books I have.

    thanks,

Wish I'd had the added information You Just Posted when I pulled up the database...You now know all I have in the database, and it did'nt mention any Double Barreled Shotguns from late 1890's to Early 1900's by H&R........

    snakeplisken;
A couple of questions on you're old H&R. First, is there any engraving on the locks, reciever, chambers or trigger guard?
Second, What proof marks are on the gun, they should be under the fore end or bottom of the chamber and reciever mating surfaces. The side lock action is what brings me to ask. Also the proofs will provide insight into date and by what firm it was built. I have a side lock H&R in 20 guage, same stampings on lock, barrels, wing hammer spurs. However, the proofs on this one indicate manufacture by L.C. Smith. I've never found any info on contract production by L.C. Smith,Parker or LaFever for H&R, but some of the old timer gunsmiths I know swear it was done in the 1890's and early 1900's.
P.S. Are the barrels Demascus, wire twist, fluid steel or modern steel?

Wait a minute, folks. Lot of misinformation being put forth here.

First, Harrington & Richardson did produce double-barrel sidelock shotguns in the late 1880's. They were produced under license from Anson & Deeley, were hammerless, and may well have been the first hammerless double guns produced in America. These Deeley-marked guns will have the Anson & Deeley markings on the lockplates, and it is not a stretch to believe that early and/or concurrent hammered gun production would be similar and have some measure of imported parts (hence the proofs 'Python' is referring to).

Neither L.C.Smith/Baker, Parker nor LeFever would have produced shotguns for H&R, nor would any "proofmarks" indicate manufacture by any of these firms. I have no clue where that came from, and would certainly like to be educated on the "proofmarks" associated with those firms.

Second, the gauge/caliber marking indicating use of the .44 shot cartridge should have been the big clue that this gun was (a) American made, and (b) pre-WW2.

I am hoping that the estimable Mr Goforth will chime in on this thread, his knowledge of H&R/IJ products far outstrips my meager efforts.

this is one of the areas of h&r's that my knowledge is lacking as this is a model i was unaware of. i would very much like to see pictures of this double barrel shotgun. the marking .410-.44 cal. would mean it is chambered for the 2 1/2 inch shell and should put the era of manufacture between 1915 and 1920.

it is possible h&r purchased shotguns from another double manufacturer. there is history of their doing such things ie; the anson & deely double and the .25 and .32 semiautomatic of webley design.

    Hi Guys,

There is no engraving on the sidelocks or on any other part
of this H&R. The hammers and lever are checkered.
I made a mistake on the SN, it is 2,7xx, not 27,xxx.
The only markings on the barrels are 410-44CAL on top of
the rib and also the serial number on the flats.
The only markings in the receiver are the serial number marked inside, plus the previously mentioned, Harrington & Richardson Arms Co., Worcester, Mass., USA, Pat., Feb 27, 00, marked on the left sideplate. Note that the patent year probably is 1900.
The only markings on the forearm iron is the SN. There are no
proof marks or any other markings anywhere. Although I haven't
    taken off the sideplates.
The barrels are 26" blued fluid steel, turning slightly brown and the receiver is case colored. The hard rubber buttplate is marked H&R Arms Co.

    Thanks,

    Snakeplisken

The additional markings are likely to be on the inside surfaces of the locks (this IS a sidelock hammer gun, right?).

Yes, the patent date is 1900.
